Course content

Module 1 – What is wine and how is it made?

  • Identify the main parts of a grape and what they contain
  • Outline the key stages in the annual cycle of grape growing
  • Name and define the different grape-growing climates and their influence on grape characteristics
  • List the requirements and products of alcoholic fermentation
  • Identify and order the key stages in the production of still red, white and rosé wines

Module 2 – Types and styles of wine

  • Identify the three main styles of wine: still, sparkling and fortified
  • Describe notable structural characteristics of wine
  • Taste and describe wines using the WSET Level 1 SAT
  • Identify differences and similarities between styles

Module 3 – Grape varieties and wines

  • Name key international and local grape varieties
  • Identify their characteristics and typical wine styles
  • Match wines with their regions and key attributes (e.g. Rioja, Chablis, Chianti, Champagne…)

Module 4 – Storage and service of wine

  • Outline ideal conditions for short- and long-term wine storage
  • Identify recommended service temperatures
  • Understand correct procedures for opening and serving wine
  • Identify key interactions between food and wine and their typical effects

Module 5 – Revision

  • Mock multiple-choice feedback examination

Assessment and certification

  • Exam format: 30 multiple-choice questions
  • Exam duration: 45 minutes
  • Pass mark: 70%
  • Certification: Official WSET digital certificate and pin

The exam can be taken either online via Remote Invigilation or in person by joining one of the paper-based exam sessions scheduled across Spain by More than Wines in any of its satellites sites.

In both cases, students must contact academia@morethanwines.com when the course is finished to confirm their preferred option and exam date with at least 21 days prior the desired date.

All exams are corrected by WSET London and results are sent directly to the student.
